Shane T. McCoy

 

Shane is a California born and raised photographer. He's the first and only still and video photographer the U.S. Marshals Service has ever hired in their 229-year history. His work has been published in hundreds of newspapers, magazines, and websites around the world. As an operational photographer, he documents every aspect the U.S. Marshals Service, in all 94 of their judicial districts, including the arrests of thousands of criminals with federal and local warrants. 

 

His duties include:

Operational still and video photography

(Providing still photos and video to the media after major operations)

Event and portrait, still and video photography

Video editing and producing

Graphic design and motion graphics

Advertising campaigns 

 

Prior to his career with the Marshals, Shane spent 15.5 years as a combat photographer for the U.S. Navy. He was the Photo Editor and Lead Photojournalist for the Navy's "All Hands Magazine" for over 5 years, spent over a year editing video for All Hands Television and served as Director of Multimedia for a year. During his military photography career, he traveled to 35 countries and multiple active war zones. He is best known for a series of photos he shot as the first detainees arrived at Guantanamo Bay's Camp X-Ray in 2002.

 

During his military career, his photography won awards in every category of the Military Photographer of The Year MILPHOG contest including being runner-up "Military Photographer of the Year" twice, Third place 3 times and multiple honorable mentions. He also placed first in video editing and graphic design in both the MILGRAPH and MILVID competitions on multiple occasions.

 

Shane is also active in the photo community as a mentor for the military's DOD Photography Workshop since 2004. He is one of the founding Staff of the "Shoot Off" workshops teaching government and military photographers and was on Black Team for the Eddie Adams Workshop for 6 years.

 

For the last 20 years, his email tagline has been "If there is no photo ... it never happened"

Shane is not currently taking any work outside of his government job.
